This is my third year with Genius Hour in the classroom. I’ve found, and used or adapted, so many resources that others have shared online, I want to give back.
So, along with my students, I will be blogging our progress this quarter. I hope to give back to the community that has been so helpful for me.
Genius Hour 2016: Here we go!
First, sometimes I tease it a bit for a few weeks – leave signs on the door or messages on the board hinting that something is coming…Or leave quotes on the board…
Then, give them a survey, but don’t tell them what it’s for. Tell them to answer honestly. I didn’t take names down on purpose, to encourage openness and honesty. Tell them it behooves them to answer the best they can. Once we look at the responses as a group, it can really help them with what’s coming.
Here is a copy of the Something’s Coming survey I gave my students. They were super serious about this and spent a lot of time coming up with thoughtful answers. I was pleasantly surprised by one of my classes.
Next, you show some videos to whet their curiosity:
Then my Powtoon creation (that isn’t working right now).
To introduce the concept – Chris Kesler’s Intro
To show ideas from real students: Kevin Brookhouser’s
Brilliant Kid Inventors: Ellen’s Show Clip
There are more here (from a CUE Rock Star Camp session):
Stay tuned for the next episode.
So far, students are curious, engaged, and throwing ideas around already. 🙂
